A woman is in serious condition after being struck by a garbage truck while standing outside her vehicle on Interstate 55 near Darien on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the woman was standing outside her vehicle on the shoulder of southbound I-55, just north of Lemont Road, around 2:41 p.m. when she bent over and was struck by a garbage truck.
The woman was transported to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with serious injuries, according to an officer with the Illinois State Police, District 2.
The incident caused significant traffic delays on southbound I-55 during the evening commute. As of 5 p.m., the center and right lanes were still shut down while officers conducted their crash reconstruction.
