The Downers Grove North student spirit organization “N-Zone” hopes to generate excitement for the school's football game Friday night—as well as awareness about cancer.
The Trojans will host conference rival Hinsdale Central for the schools' annual "Old Oaken Bucket" football game. The series dates back to October 1935, when Hinsdale created a "Little Brown Jug" rivalry for its game against Downers Grove. Each year, the teams play not only for bragging rights, but to keep possession of the bucket.
This year, however, students are also hoping the game will bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“We thought the highly anticipated ‘bucket game’ against Hinsdale Central would be the perfect occasion to also raise awareness for cancer,” said senior Garrett Tierney, one of the student leaders of N-Zone.
The group is raising money for the American Cancer Society by offering a pink, Downers Grove North-themed T-shirt, and donating half the money it collects. The shirts, which have an original and limited-edition design, will be sold on Friday night from 6 p.m. until the end of the varsity game in the stadium, next to the concession stand.
“This is the third year that N-Zone has existed at North,” said Kim Jaros, N-Zone co-sponsor. “We are so proud of how dedicated our students are and how they took the lead on picking this cause.”
“The N-Zone creates cheers, chooses themes and provides an energized atmosphere at the competitions,” added N-Zone co-sponsor Mark Mirandola. “With our great student leaders this year, we have seen the student body involvement at an all-time high.”
N-Zone has also created a web page where community members may donate online. See http://main.acsevents.org/goto/dgnzone.
