Did you know that this week—May 13-20—is officially Police Week in the United States? According to PoliceWeek.org

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In the spirit of the week, we reached out to our DuPage County readers on Facebook and asked what they appreciate most about their local police departments. Here’s some of what readers shared with us:

Carol Gog:“Back in the nineties, I locked my keys in my car, and found out that Woodridge was one of the very last of the 'burbs out here, whose police men come help you, for free, just like that. That is amazing!” – Woodridge Patch Facebook

Cat Cole:“They love dogs! Responding to dogs being abused or neglected. Helping lost & found dogs. Just stopping to talk when I'm outside with mine. Being animal friendly is awesome. I love the Lisle PD.” – Lisle Patch Facebook

Vanessa Mason: “I *heart* NPD! Our community is of the regions' finest because of your dedication and hard work. Thanks for all you do!” – Naperville Patch Facebook

Maria Hodges Risch: “Naperville has the best police department! They are professional without arrogance and are down to earth and usually fun to talk to. Nothing but good things to say and they greatly contribute to the awesomeness of Naperville. Thank you for all your hard work!” – Naperville Patch Facebook

Tina Krumdick: “I love that they always answer the call 24/7. And that they're pet friendly.” – Lisle Patch Facebook

Anne Chang Blaeske“Their efforts during the floods to evacuate (and returned to our house to get my son's forgotten medicine) and their compassion after the floods during the clean up and their diligence in patrolling our empty neighborhoods to keep the possessions that survived safe. Also, their promptness in answering calls no matter how silly they can be on a regular basis. – Lisle Patch Facebook

Julie Erickson Dahl: “They are friendly, respond quickly & help our community.” – Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook

Lana Caswell:“The fact I never have to call them.” – Wheaton Patch Facebook

Hannah Jacobsen:“They are polite, professional, and reasonable. They issue traffic citations to those who deserve them, and their policing ideology keeps the community safe. Thank you!” – Naperville Patch Facebook

Jacqueline Scott Farnaus:“Their professionalism!” – Downers Grove Patch Facebook

Carol Johnson Seith: “Their compassion for our youth!” – Hinsdale Patch Facebook
